Hydrogen sulfide and ammonia are the two main and most harmful gas components of odors produced in livestock, poultry and dairy Farms operations. When these gases are airborne, they can pose serious threats to human, animal, environmental, and community health. Filters and carbon scrubbers are commonly used to reduce and control the emission of these gases. Facts about ammonia

Ammonia has a sharp, irritating and pungent odor. The U. S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has set a 15-minute exposure limit for gaseous ammonia of 35 ppm by volume in the environmental air and an 8-hour exposure limit of 25 ppm by volume, [ eight-hour time weighed average (TWA)]1. The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently reduced the IDLH* from 500ppm to 300ppm2.

Facts about hydrogen sulfide

Hydrogen sulfide is an extremely hazardous gas which can be immediately life threatening at high concentrations (300 mg/m3 or 200 ppm)1. As concentrations approach 100 ppm, odor becomes imperceptible because of olfactory (sense of smell) fatigue. At these levels, the gas disrupts cellular respiration and may cause profound respiratory depression as well as cardiac dysrhythmias. At a concentration of 150 ppm, the olfactory nerve is paralyzed2. Hydrogen sulfide causes Inflammation of the moist membranes of eye and respiratory tract, olfactory neuron loss and death3.
